Like most other things in life that are considered 'painful' there is no way to know for sure how this is going to feel to each individual. The first time is usually the most painful and the longest time-wise as you'll have the most coarse hair. Most people find it uncomfortable or slightly painful, while some feel little to no discomfort. Regular maintenance and following at home aftercare make it easier and easier each time!
NO! Your hair will grow back finer because it is being removed from the root, so instead of th blunt, coarse tip you get from shaving or hair removal creams, you will notice thin, wispy tips. The more you wax the thinner and more sparse the hair will become.
Your hair needs to be AT LEAST a 1/4 inch long, which is about the length of a grain of rice. If you can easily pinch the hair it is probably a good length. It is better to be longer than shorter if you are unsure. Three weeks of growth from your last shave or nair/veet is ideal. I know, I know...that sounds terrible, but it will get you the best results! Hair that is too short will not adhere to the wax making it difficult and painful to attempt to remove.
Again, each individual is different and for some people the longer you've been waxing, the longer you can go between waxes. However, most people find that 4-6 weeks is a good range. I recommend 4 weeks for clients who are new to waxing.
No! Shaving causes itching when the hair grows in because of how blunt and coarse it is, as well as the added irritation from razor burn and ingrown hairs. The fine hairs that grow in after waxing are much softer and grow much slower preventing itchiness and irritation. Also, no more razor burn and little to no ingrown hairs!
Waxing removes your hair from the root, leaving you with no stubble and finer, softer regrowth, as well as smooth skin
No nicks, cuts, or razor and chemical burns
No itchiness
Waxing gently exfoliates the skin
Economically friendly; you only pay for your wax every 4-6 weeks instead of purchasing expensive razors each week
People with sensitive skin may experience redness, tenderness, and/or small bumps that usually subside within a few hours to a day. This is not anythng that should interfere with your normal daily routine.
Shaving constantly disrupts our hairs natural growth cycle, as it cuts the tip of the hair leaving the root. Once you begin waxing it is normal to see some short hairs immidiately after or they may even appear within the next week or two. This is nothing to be concerned about and it is important you do NOT shave these hairs. After your first few wax sessions, your hairs should all be on the same growth cycle meaning no more short hairs.
Yes! There are many different wax options out there for all different skin types! Your skin is prepped and finished with high quality skin care products. If you do have skin concerns, please make your specialist aware beforehand. The Bee’s Knees uses a vegan, hypoallergenic hard wax that is suitable for all skin types. The soft wax used is a creamy, gentle formula made especially for sensitive skin. Of course, it is possible for anyone to have a reaction to anything, so if you find any unusual or concerning issues after your wax, please consult with your specialist on how to proceed.
There are many health conditions and medications that can affect the skin, so it is always best to consult with your physician if you are unsure.
When to be cautious/check with your doctor first:
If you are taking any hormone replacements
If you smoke
If you have rosacea
If you are on blood thinners
If you have diabetes
If you use harsh or chemical exfoliants
If you have been in the sun recently (no sun exposure 2 days before and after your wax)
When to avoid waxing:
If you have any chronic illness that compromises the skin such as lupus or AIDS
If you have taken Accutane in the past 12 months
If you have used retinoids in the past 7 days
If you are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation
If you are sunburned
If there is an open lesion where you want to be waxed
*It is important that if you are on a prescription acne medication, you check with your doctor and wax specialist before proceeding*
The Bee’s Knees uses both hard and soft wax! The hard wax is a gentle, vegan, hypoallergenic wax; this is used for most areas of the body. The soft wax is a creamy, gentle formula for sensitive skin and is used for the eyebrows, legs, and the pubic mound. If you prefer either wax, please let us know!
Hard wax does not need a strip to be removed, is usually less sticky, and is designed to only adhere to your hair, not to your skin. Hard wax has more room for user error as the wax specialist can go over the same area of skin multiple times without compromising the skin.
Soft or strip wax uses a paper or cloth strip to be removed. This wax adheres to both the hair and skin, exfoliating the skin even more than hard wax. Soft wax can typically only be applied to an area of skin once without compromising it.
At least 3 weeks of no shaving or hair removal creams
Exfoliate in a warm bath the night before, followed by moisturizing the area
Freshen up beforehand if possible, if not, feminine wipes are provided for you at the salon
Do NOT apply any lotions or oils right before your appointment
If needed, take a painkiller 30 minutes before your appointment
I do my best to remove any trace of wax once we are finished, but I know sometimes residue can linger! If you find that you are sticky, any oil will remove the residue. Please make sure it is an oil safe for use on intimate areas.
No. Hair removal creams such as Nair and Veet consist of chemicals that should not be anywhere near your intimate areas. It is also easy to get a chemical burn with these products. Even if the label says it is safe for the bikini area, I recommend steering clear.
No. Everyone’s skin is different and while many people receive excellent results from waxing, others are just not ideal candidates. If you have received multiple waxes and have followed the aftercare instructions provided by your wax specialist, yet still experience severe ingrown hairs, rashes, hives, or any other abnormal reaction or discomfort that does not subside, waxing is most likely not your best choice. If you find any concerning reactions immediately contact your wax specialist and physician for more information.
